Ishigaki officials questioned about YouTube video leak

The Japan Coast Guard sent additional investigators Saturday to question colleagues in Naha and Ishigaki island in Okinawa Prefecture about leaked videos of a Chinese trawler ramming their boats.

The investigation team determined the same day that the footage, which appeared on the video-sharing website YouTube on Thursday, was edited by the coast guard's Ishigaki branch. Identical images were apparently accessible to several officials in the Ishigaki branch's investigative section.

However, a video roughly matching the leaked footage was also given to public prosecutors in Naha, and the investigators are also working on the possibility that an outsider was the culprit.

The coast guard now has 13 investigators at the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters in Naha and the Ishigaki office, after sending two additional investigators on Saturday.

The Ishigaki Coast Guard Office recorded nearly 10 hours of footage from several patrol vessels of the Chinese trawler that rammed coast guard patrol boats Mizuki and Yonakuni in waters off the disputed Senkaku Islands on Sept. 7, coast guard sources said.

The captain of the Chinese trawler was arrested on Sept. 8 and sent to Ishigaki for questioning. He was released on Sept. 25, in what was widely interpreted as a political move, following a tense diplomatic standoff between Japan and China.
